Room 5 Writing

We have been learning about persuasive writing. We looked at the designs for the proposed new flag for New Zealand and each chose the one we liked best. We then wrote some reasons for choosing that particular flag. Some of us managed to convince our classmates to change their mind from their initial choice.

Today we voted for one flag and then collaboratively wrote some reasons why this should be out new flag. I am very pleased with what the children have come up with as their final persuasive piece.

Obviously we should choose this flag because it represents New Zealand.

The silver fern is a native plant and it makes people think of New Zealand. All our representative sports teams wear the silver fern on the uniform. Our passports and money also have the silver fern on them.

The red stars represent the Southern Cross, which is in New Zealand’s night sky. People use the Southern Cross to navigate when they are at sea or lost. It points them in the right direction. Māori used the Southern Cross to find their way to New Zealand.

The red, white and blue colours of this flag are the same colours as our current flag so they link to what we already have.

Surely these reasons have convinced you to choose this flag as our new New Zealand flag.
