Congratulations to: Bree, Marissa, Declan and Samuel. for winning the Junior Syndicate section. You were all fantastic, and very brave to get up and perform in front of an audience.

Today we farewelled Patrick, who is heading back to Ireland on Monday. We have loved having Patrick in our room and will miss him a lot. May God richly bless you, Patrick, on the next stage in your journey. We all enjoyed the party lunch (thank you so much for the effort you made in preparing the yummy food for us) and the movie Hotel for Dogs (apologies for the lateness in getting out of class this afternoon).

We have one more week of school left for Term 2. Keep warm and healthy.

Celebration and Room 5 Writing

On Saturday Bree competed in a Rhythmic Gymnastic Competition. Yesterday she learnt that she came second. Ka pai, Bree, that is great news.

This morning we made popcorn in an electric frypan. We had lots of laughs as the corn popped out of the pan and onto the floor. Fortunately we didn't set off the fire alarms! We then wrote about what happened. Here's some photos, thanks to Kate, and some snippets of writing:

Bridget, Jessica, Harriet and Lulu

Patrick, Kempton, Jacky and Declan
The popcorn went pop, pop, pop! It was really funny. I was not expecting that. Marissa

We made popcorn. Once it sizzled it started to pop. It was popping like a cannon. I just wished that it flew into my mouth. Patrick

Mrs K-C put the kernels in the pan. We waited for awhile. Then it popped all over the place. Roisin

After it had all popped  Mrs K-C put it in a bowl. We got to eat it. It was delicious. Nicholas

Character Day

WOW! Thank you everyone (especially our parents) for the amazing effort you put into creating your characters.
From your choosing of clothes to your looks to your characteristics - what a wonderful range of characters we had in Room 5 today.
We loved having our big buddies join us for writing. They wrote out our plan then helped us to write our character descriptions. We especially liked having help with our spelling - thanks so much Big Buddies, you are awesome!
Come and check out our walls for our plans, descriptions and photos.

Monday 8 June 2015

Term 2 Week 8 'Star of the Week'

This week's 'Star of the Week' is Lulu.
Ka pai, Lulu, it's great to have you in Room 5.

Lots of Room 5 people play sport over the weekend. On Saturday Jessica received the 'Player of the Day' cup for her netball team. Patrick was named 'Player of the Day' for his rugby team.

Neave competed in a Highland Dancing competition.

Congratulations to these people and everyone who played sport this weekend.

A reminder that our Character Day is upon us. Tomorrow (09.06) we will come to school dressed as a character of our imagination. I am looking forward to seeing who turns up in Room 5 in the morning. We are going to have a fun day being someone new and writing with our buddies.

Homework this week is spelling and basic facts. Both lists will be tested on Friday. Reading will be a little different - we have chosen our own groups and a Maori legend to read. We will be working on this for the week and presenting our legend to the rest of the class later in the week.
On Thursday we will have recorder lessons.

Friday 5 June 2015

Term 2 Week 7

Patrick was presented with a certificate at today's school assembly.
Ka pai, Patrick, we are proud of you.

We have been learning about symmetry. This has provided us with some challenges, but also lots of discussion. We have been trying to work out lines of symmetry for capital letters. We discovered that 10 letters have no lines of symmetry, 4 have two lines and 12 have one line of symmetry. Check out these photos of us working out the lines of symmetry:

Lulu and Jessica
Trinity and Zofia

Jacky and Preston
Samuel and Finn C
A reminder about the Character Day on Tuesday 9 June. Keep thinking about what your character looks like, their emotions, what they like and what they do. I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
Enjoy the weekend - keep warm.

Wednesday 3 June 2015

Happy Birthday

Today was Samuel's 7th birthday and now that he is really old he needs his walking stick!
We sang Happy Birthday and wished Samuel all the best as a 7 year old.
In maths we are learning about symmetry. We have been exploring the different shapes we can make when we fold a piece of paper in half and cut along the folded edge. We know that both halves are the same. Come in and check out the wall display.
Here's some of us cutting our shapes:

Zofia and Natalia
Bree and Marissa
Kempton and Jacky
Preston and Finn H

Tuesday 2 June 2015

Term 2 Week 7 'Star of the Week'

This week's 'Star of the Week' is Harriet.
Ka pai, Harriet, it's great to have you in Room 5.

We had lots of other things to celebrate as well:

Sirayah received her first Bronze Mathletics Certificate. Ka pai, Sirayah, keep up the great work.

Nicholas was named 'Player of the Day' after his rugby game. Ka pai, Nicholas, you played well.

I forgot to give out the homework certificates on Friday, so it was a long wait for the following: Neave, Bridget, Kate, Marissa and Samantha as well as Roisin who received the certificate. The standard of homework has risen and I am impressed with the sentences people are coming up with. You can have a break from spelling and sentences this week.

This morning our buddy class came to do some discussing and writing with us. This is in preparation for our character day next Tuesday (9 June). Last week you  received the Create a Character newsletter about this. Our buddies wrote some lists of characteristics of our made up character in our homework books. Please check the list to see what your child is planning to be. You are not expected to spend up large for this, but can use items you already have. If you have any questions about this day, please contact me.

On Thursday we plan to have our last hockey session (this is weather dependent). Please bring sports shoes and (girls) shorts to change into.
