Birthday Celebration and Other News

Today is Lulu's 7th birthday. We sang 'Happy Birthday' to Lulu and wished her all the best as a 7 year old.

Congratulations to Kate who, along with Joe from Room 4,  has been named to represent the Junior School on the School Council. Thanks, Kate, for stepping up to this role.

We've had another busy week at school. The children enjoyed the water safety day on Monday and the running session with Anita on Tuesday. Today we had our first buddy spelling test and logged on to Mathletics. I am very impressed with how well everyone listens and is able to follow instructions - what an amazing group of children we have in Room 5. Thank you for your support with the spelling homework. I have realised that I didn't send home the notice about the spelling homework expectations - you have managed very well without it, but I will send it home on Monday.

Looking ahead to next week:
Monday: Library day
Tuesday: Run, Jump, Throw - please bring sports shoes to change into and girls who wear the pinafore should have shorts to change into.
Wednesday: Recorder lessons. If you wish to buy a recorder they are available at the school office or you can buy them at another shop if you wish. We do have school recorders which the children can use in class time.
Friday: School assembly 11:50am in the school hall.

Swimming Stories

Last week we went swimming at Wharenui Swimming Pool. We all enjoyed our swim week. Here's some of our stories:

I went swimming at Wharenui. We went in a boat. We had to a teacher who made the boat wiggle. The teacher wiggled the boat so much the boat made waves. It was so wavy we went back and forth and side to side. It was fun. by Trinity

On Monday I went to Wharenui Pool. I went to jump off a board without goggles. it was quite scary. Then I did monkey on the wall. by Samantha

We did swimming last week. I did flips in the water. I had a board on my back. by Gabrielle

Term 1 Week 4 'Star of the Week'

This week's 'Star of the Week' is Jessica.
Congratulations, Jessica, it's great to have you in Room 5.

Today we had our last swim session. It was a busy but fun session of water safety. We were in small groups and had four different things to do: make waves and a whirl pool, ride in a rubber dinghy, jump in the pool and swim with life jackets on, and jump in the pool fro the starting blocks and move down the pool by pulling along the side. We were all buzzing on the way back to school.
Check out this link for some photos:

Remember to bring sports shoes and, for some girls, shorts for the first of our Run, Jump, Throw sessions tomorrow.

On Monday afternoon we will visit the school library. Children must return last week's book before they can issue a new one.
On Tuesday we will have our first Run, Jump, Throw session with Anita from Canterbury Athletics. Everyone can bring sports shoes to change into and girls who wear pinafores should bring shorts to wear for the sessions.

We will begin spelling homework. We will talk about the expectations so your child should be able to explain what they have to do. If you are unsure please come in and ask.

Term 1 Week 2

Congratulations to Patrick, who is 2015's first 'Star of the Week'.
Ka pai, Patrick, it's great to have you in Room 5.

This week we will continue to establish our routines. I am very impressed with the way everyone is picking them up. We read this morning, so everyone will have a book to read tonight.
Our school assembly will be on Thursday 12 February at 2:15pm. This is because the Middle and Senior Syndicates will be competing in the school swimming sports on Friday, our usual assembly time.

Today a blue swimming notice was sent home. The notice was also sent by email. The form only needs to be returned if you are able to help with changing room supervision.

Please ensure your child brings a named uniform polar fleece to school, even on warm days. The weather can change quickly, as we saw today, and some children were feeling the cold.

Looking ahead to next week: on Monday 23 February we will have a 'Meet the Teacher' evening. This will start at 7pm with an important talk about the Writing Programme we will be using this year. Meet in the hall for this talk, then you can meet in your child's classroom.

I am looking forward to a great week with these amazing children.

Term 1 Week 1

Well our first week is over. What a great class we are in. The children have been amazing as they have learnt so many new routines this week. I am very proud of the way they have all focused and tried to follow instructions and expectations. They all deserve a long weekend to rest, relax and read.
Today our first piece of work went on the wall. Come in to read our prayers.
Next week we will begin group reading. It may take a week to get the groups sorted and everyone back into the reading routine.
On Thursday we will be having our first School Assembly - 2:15pm in the hall.
On Friday we will have our first spelling test. This is just to find out what the children know and what they need to learn, so nothing to worry about. Each child will have their own spelling list based on their test.

Looking ahead to Week 3:
Meet the teacher will be on Monday 16 February at 7pm.
We will be swimming Monday 16 - Thursday 19 and Monday 23 February. A swimming notice will be sent home early next week with times and details. We do need help in the change rooms, especially the males, so if you have some time free on any of those mornings, please let us know.

It has been nice to meet so many parents and grandparents this week. Please feel free to come into the classroom anytime before or after school to see what's happening. Have a great weekend.

First Day

Welcome back to school. It was great to see the lovely smiling faces of the children this morning. I also appreciated meeting so many parents both before and after school. Do pop in regularly to see what's going on. We are going to have a great year together.
Tomorrow spelling lists will come home. We will have a big spelling test next week and spelling homework will be based on the results. Please don't stress about this - I just need to find out what the children know and what they need to learn. If you have any questions, please just ask.
